Ten Bad Odors That Invade Your Home And How To Banish Them

Paul Davis restoration

We’ve been led to believe that our olfactory talents pale compared to pigs, dogs and rodents. But that opinion no longer passes the sniff test. Science is proving that human noses more than hold their own against the animal kingdom. Our schnozzes detect over a trillion distinct scents and even flag emotions like fear and disgust.

Homeowners may feel those strong emotions when bad odors invade their properties. “It’s a very common call from customers: something smells bad in our house and we can’t figure out what it is,” says Bob Hillier, President of Paul Davis of Greater Houston, Texas. “Chances are it’s coming from one of 10 common areas, most of which owners can treat and resolve without professional help.”

Garbage and trash containers: These can stink because the garbage hasn’t been emptied or the containers themselves are coated with smelly bacteria. Taking out the trash more frequently and cleaning the containers quells the smell.

Bedding: Bedding picks up dead skin cells, hair, secretions like sweat and, for many, pet dander. Don’t go by looks: it may appear clean, but bedding needs weekly laundering to remove odorous substances. Lab tests have shown that unwashed pillowcases may harbor up to 17,000 times more bacteria than toilet seats!

Frontloading washing machines: Rubber door gaskets frequently trap moisture, which mildews rapidly. Dry these gaskets after use and leave the door slightly ajar to dry thoroughly.
Dishwasher: Yes, dishwashers need cleaning, too. Food residues can clog the drain and spray assemblies, leaving water that stagnates and stinks. Use commercial dishwasher cleaning tablets to keep water moving and the machine fresh.

Sink Disposal: Kitchen sinks are another household item that are often dirtier than toilets; disposals get even less scrubbing. Commercial cleaners designed to clean disposals vanquish the hidden residue and the smell.

New furniture and carpeting: These items – manufactured from treated fabrics, engineered materials and the like – often release high levels of volatile organic compounds. If you’ve recently bought a sofa or installed new carpet, they may be causing that irritating chemical smell.

Sewage: If you smell sewage, it’s time to call the professionals. The sewer line could be backed up, sewer vents may be clogged or there could be a hidden leak. Whatever the exact source, sewage is a biological hazard that must be handled by trained professionals.
Moisture and mold: Smelling dampness and mold that you can’t identify? This is another project for professionals. Moisture sources will need to be corrected and mold properly treated to prevent regrowth.

Pets: Just like humans, pets shed hair and body secretions that bacteria find delicious. Wash pet bedding and food bowls regularly and treat pet stains with products designed to remove pet odor.

“And number 10: spoiling stored food,” Hillier says. “Rotting potatoes, in particular, smell absolutely foul. A spud decomposing in the basement can make people on the second floor wrinkle their noses in disgust!”
