If you read national news sites, you’ll probably find multiple places that have experienced flooding recently. Flash floods are the most common severe weather disaster in the country.
To help you and your family endure a flood disaster, we’d like to share five flood preparedness tips to celebrate National Preparedness Month (NPM).
- #1. Create a Plan – The most important thing that you should do is create a family emergency plan. Take time to rehearse and review it with your family. To make this process easier, Paul Davis has a form you can download at the link at the end of this post.
- #2. Build an Emergency Kit – Some items this should include are: a gallon of water per person, a first aid kit, battery-powered radio, signal whistle, moist towelettes, dust masks, garbage bags, pliers, and local maps.
- #3. Keep Gutters Clean – Clear all debris from gutters and downspouts; to help water flow, it is vital that the drains are not clogged.
- #4. Look at Flood Maps – It’s important to know if your house is in a flood area so you can get proper insurance. Just click the link at the bottom of the page to view flood maps in your area.
- #5. Understand Flood Terms – Do you know what the difference is between a flood watch and a flood warning? A flood watch means that there is a possibility that a flood will occur in your area. A flood warning means that a flood is headed your way and that you need to be prepared.
